Description

Well, here it is. Shao Lin warrior monk. Painted in PS7 with a mouse for about 17 hours. Photo reference used for paintig the tiger and the background. Few things to say:
Yes, I know that the burnt symbols of Tiger and Dragon on the hands of Shao Lin monks did not look like those that I have drawn...Sorry for that :( but I think that it just looks better :)
And yes, the tiger does have ears! Just on the reference photo the tiger was in a battle mood and cats always press their ears to the head while fighting...

Wow! I love the tiger, and how the dragon is wrapped around the monk, really nice!

The tiger and the dragon looks great, so do the monk. There just the thing that I don't like the composition very much, but i cant say what it is, sry!

This suffers badly from "compartmentalized color", the common case of filling the areas of a painting with flat colors and then applying black and white to make "light" and "shadow".
What to do to avoid it - well, first of all, follow the classic rule of "tone first, color second": the flawed coloring does exactly the opposite. Plan the color composition so all colors form a harmony. And think of how the colors interact: how presence of a colored object affects other color objects in the painting. The latter is a skill learned slowly, I have to admit, but it's a very advantageous one to have.
A good starting point / refresher is the section on color in "Creative Illustration" by Andrew Loomis. And of course, nothing beats exercising the eye by observation and identifying tone and dominant hue in everything.

To GFXartist sponsor arenhaus : Well, I'm not quiet sure about "compartmentalized color" but ,anyway, thank you for comment and advice. I will check this out.

By the way: people, does anybody think that a brighter and more colourful background would be better here?

You have amazing talent Ilya. I like your use of the green and earth color schemes. I could not begin to fathom how you go about doing this kind of artwork.
9/9 from me!

There's something weird going on in here... some parts of the pic look like cut-outs, as in, they look like they got cut out from another picture, then glued on. Most noticeabe are the tiger's nose and the monk's leg, but the rest of the pic have that feeling too. The "compartmentalized color" that arenhaus mentioned is a big part of the cut-out illusion, but I think the shading is also off here and there (e.g. around the tiger's nose), which contributes to the problem.

Other than that, this is a great painting. And I think the BG is fine as it is. :)

Hi Storyteller,

This is a large step forward than your previously posted work! Wonderful colors and harmony! Can't wait to see what you bring out next!

not bad, in my opinion, the composition is odd. You're not leading the eye anywhere specific, it just goes round and round... and yes, obvious case of 'compartmentalized color'.

And you also seem to be afraid of negative space.

Wow you did that with a mouse... I don't have that kind of patience. I think on the contrary a darker background would work better, like uber-dark. But it looks good as is too.
